Taste the rainbow.

We have been learning how to put more description into our writing by using our senses. We did an experiment with Skittles and then we had to choose how to write about it.

My Lamb Poem

Kia ora, Fellow Friends and Family
This week we were learning about the human body and the organs which keep us alive and healthy. So, our teachers decided that we need to see some real organs. They brought some lamb hearts and kidneys to school so we could observe them and dissect them. I decided to write a poem about it.

The Creepy

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/174/393538058_463d9d2440.jpg

The Creepy Driveway…
I ran to a nearby tree with mud
squishing between my toes. I touched the tree and my hand sunk into the weird soft mucky bark. The tops of the trees were like lightning bolts coming to kill me. I ran even faster...
I slowly walked down the driveway and I was frozen in fear, scared that a demon was coming to give me a jumpscare... Slowly I looked behind me to see if anything was there, it sent so many shivers down my spine.
I looked behind me and I prepared to smack something in the face but nothing was there so I went on.
The air smelt peaceful but there was something else. I sniffed again,
it began to get colder and colder as I crept closer and closer.
Suddenly I felt like I was gonna die of hunger. I reached into my bag and pulled out something cold, musty and squishy. I threw it to the ground. I was sad that I did not have much to eat. At that point I was crying.
I listened to the wind. It was singing a little song for the trees as they danced with the wind it made me feel better about coming to this place. I stopped crying and calmed down.

I think it was a few weeks ago our teacher Mrs Dixon told all of us to create a song about the "solar-system. our song was called flying throw space and it went like this

I got this feeling, for precious space,
It’s almost everywhere but I can’t keep my pace,
Oh Hallelujah,turn up my bass,
Cause will be here stunk in this random place,

I feel no gravity around me,
And my feet don’t know where to ,
All the planets I can see,
It almost stung me like a bee,
Turn the key,

these were all the people that helped me...

Match the thesis to the hypothesis

Kia ora

We are learning how to match a thesis and and write scientific reports. We have been doing experiments and writing about them. This is a reading activity we did. We had to be able to match a thesis with its hypothesis.

We are learning how to understand the structure and language of a report about a scientific experiment #3 Understanding that a hypothesis is a brainy prediction based on what you already know.
In this exercise you need to match a thesis with its hypothesis.  Use the ‘Fill tool’ to colour code the matching ideas.
                               Thesis                                                                      Hypothesis
I know this……                                                                         So therefore if I do this I think this will happen…
I know that a puddle of water is a small amount of water lying (usually) on the ground. I know that water is a substance which is found on our planet and that it can exist as a solid (ice), liquid or a gas (water vapour). I know that the main reason water changes from one state to another on Earth is because of  temperature -heat or cold. On Earth a sunny day is when there are no clouds, the sky is blue and the temperature is usually warm or hot.
I predict that when I mix vinegar and baking soda together that a chemical reaction will occur and that I will be able to notice this. I might feel hotness or coldness, notice smoke or bubbles, smell something, hear some kind of noise or  find that the taste or texture of the foods has changed.
I know that heavy things usually sink and light things float. However, container ships are heavy but they still float so there must be more things that have an effect on floating than just weight. Blu Tack is a squishy material that is quite light. It usually comes as a wide, flat strip but you can shape it into a round ball, a sausage shape, an O shape etc or you could flatten it out into a thin, wide shape like a leaf or saucer. Leaves usually float and ships look a little like a leaf shape.
I predict that when I take an ice cube out of a freezer it will begin to change back into liquid water (this is called melting) because it will no longer be colder than 0 degrees centigrade.
I know that an ice cube is water which is frozen. I know that that liquid water freezes into ice when the temperature reaches 0 degrees centigrade. An ice cube will stay an ice cube as long as it stays in a freezer.
I predict that if I make a puddle of water somewhere on the playground on a hot, dry day that the puddle will dry up and disappear quite quickly.
I know that everything we eat is made up of different kinds of chemicals.Sometimes when you mix different chemicals together they react with each other in different ways and the substances will do things that they didn’t do before (chemical reaction) and become different to what they were like before (chemical change). You will be able to notice things happening by using your 5 senses to  listen, smell, feel, look at and sometimes taste what is going on. I know that vinegar and baking soda are both food substances and I learned that they are chemically different
I predict that if I take some ice cubes out of a freezer and wrap them in different materials, I will find that one material will keep the ice cube frozen for longer than the others. This material would then have proven itself to be the best insulator.
I know that liquid water changes into a solid (ice) when the temperature reaches 0 degrees centigrade. I know that a freezer will keep water solid because a freezer’s job is to keep food at a temperature just below 0 degrees centigrade.
We are going to use Bluestack as our material. We will use the same amount of Blu Tack to make three different shapes. One will be a straight, rectangular strip of Blutack, one will be a compact, round ball and the third will be a rounded  saucer shape like a boat. We predict that at least one of these will float.
I know that insulators are materials that can be used to protect yourself from too much heat or cold. When we put clothes on because we are cold, the clothes are insulators which help our bodies stay warm. If you put insulating material like Pink Batts in the ceiling of your house, in the winter the Batts help keep warm air inside the house. In the summer, The Pink Batts help stop hot air coming into the house so they help to keep us cool. Many  food containers like Thermos flasks and Chilly Bins are made out of insulating materials to keep food hot or cold.
I predict that when I put some liquid water into a freezer it will change from a liquid state into a solid state (ice) because the temperature in the freezer will be below 0 degrees centigrade.

Scientific writing

 Kia ora
We are learning how to read and write scientific reports. We have been doing experiments and writing about them. This is a reading activity we did. We had to be able to match a title for a report with a wondering question.
We are learning how to understand the structure and language of a report about a scientific experiment.
In this exercise you need to match a title with its question. Use the ‘Fill tool’ to colour code the matching ideas.
Notice that none of these questions begin with a ‘Why….’.  This is because the purpose of a scientific experiment report is to share what you thought you knew, what you thought would happen and your observations about what actually did happen. It’s a bit like you are saying:
I’m wondering this…..because I know this…...so therefore if I do this I think this might happen.
So, at the end of a successful scientific report, you may not be able to say why something happened but you will be on the way to finding out why.
Then, when you do find out why, you will have to learn how to write an Explanation. The purpose of  Explanation writing is to answer Why questions. So, do not be surprised if your teachers decide to teach you Explanation writing later on!!!

My Zoofari trip.

Kia Ora

This week, we went to  Auckland on a Zoofari trip. We stayed there for two days at the old elephant house. I didn't like it because I did not get much sleep at all. But I did really like the food. For dinner we had sausages and they were delicious

We are doing animal reports. My one was about the tarantula. Sadly I did not get any photos of them. But here is a photo of 2 otters.

Hooks

Hook Activity

A few weeks ago we started to write together in paragraphs using hooks e.g. one person would write something then the other person would write something, then they have to put them together to make one big story.

Nitro Circus.jpg
Wow!!! We all shouted as the motorbike did a backflip then it did afrontflip!
Fire busted out the back of the motorcycle. OMG they stood up on the motorcycle IN MID AIR!!!
The crowd roared with lion’s expression getting louder and louder. With a Bang and a Crunch they finished their act.

Too fast. I have lost control! The cars hit with great force shattering all the windows.
“My heart felt like it would burst out of my chest, I was so scared”
One car came from one, side another from the other.
It was like an explosion of one thousand sounds.
They hit from all angles like light bouncing off a mirror.

Family Horse Riding Esterel Campsite - Cote d Azur, France… | Flickr
Have you ever had a horse ride? The horses trotted up the hill tilting me side to side.
The wind blew the grass like little waves in the sea on a cool spring day as the mountain stood proudly whispering to the wind.
It was relaxing whenever the horse walked
The forest sang like an angel and made us feel safe.
